Counting Through the Shoe

The idea of counting cards has quite a bit of stigma associated with it. But it doesn't have to. For our final blackjack system we are simply going to teach you how to be a good player. That includes knowing whether the deck situation is favorable, unfavorable, or neutral at all times. When it is favorable you increase your bet size, without being overly obvious about it. This is not difficult to pull off.

As a tourist using mostly $5 chips to do your betting, you have nothing to worry about (as far as getting heat from the casino goes) if you are loosely counting cards. If you live near the casino and you are there all the time, that may be a different story. However even then you will probably stay off the radar with this system if you are not a high-roller.

Counting cards is difficult and requires a great amount of practice and skill. Loosely counting cards, on the other hand, is easy and requires almost no practice. The purpose of counting cards is to reverse the small house edge and put it in your favor. In cannot be over-emphasized how meaningful that is. When the odds are against you, you will eventually lose if you keep playing. When they are in your favor, you will eventually win - assuming that you use good bankroll management.

First things first. You must know how to play perfect basic strategy. You can learn this from strategy cards fairly easily. For our blackjack system here we are not going to ever vary from making the correct basic strategy play.

Shoe games only. Single and double-deck games no longer are a viable option for serious blackjack players, because the casinos have adjusted the rules too far in favor of the house in these. Typically blackjack now only pays 6-5 instead of 3-2 in these games, and you can only double-down on a 10 or 11. That is more than enough to seal the player's fate. Never play in those types of games.

The house thinks that shoe games are safe because they burn about 4 or 5 cards and figure nobody is likely to be able to count good enough to take them for any serious money with so many decks in use. Perhaps they are right; but we can certainly follow the cards being dealt in a loose count and find spots where the shoe becomes favorable for the player. It doesn't happen all that often, but when it does we up our bets accordingly and enjoy a nice little edge.

The basics. After the shuffle, watch all the cards being played. Face cards, 10's, and aces are bad; 2's through 6's are good. Match these up in your head and always have a thought in your head when the next deal starts whether the shoe is neutral, slightly bad, really bad, slightly good, or really good. Most of the time it will be neutral or slightly one way or another. It takes a whole lot of extra small cards being dealt out to make the shoe really good, not just a few.

Betting adjustments. When the shoe is slightly good increase your bet slightly, like by a chip or two. When it is really good double or triple the bet from when it is slightly good. When it is slightly bad bet the house minimum, and when it is really bad go to the restroom (and when you get back bet the minimum until the next shuffle).

That is basically it. Play as long as you want but get the money in when the shoe is overdue for face cards and aces. You don't need an exact count. You just need to be cognizant of the condition of the shoe at all times. Don't get distracted, because if you miss a few cards it can really screw you up. Pound for pound this blackjack system has done better for me than any other gambling system I have ever used in a casino.
